Thanks Michael & Trevor!

Hi David - that's interesting. I haven't heard that before, but would love to hear more if anyone can find the data. I can see the logic behind it... though for me, the benefits of accountability outweigh the potential pitfalls.

I read in a blog about keeping your habit change to yourself. (the title was something like "Shut Up!") The author maintained that publicizing your potential change gives the ego approval and sabotages your efforts. Anyone heard of this?

Great article you have here. I think goals are very important indeed! I like what you wrote about generalization as well, very informative. Keep it up.

Hi Kelly - nice new haircut!

That's a tricky thing and something I, and a lot of others, struggle with. I'm definitely a night owl - or at least skew in that direction - and I frequently have to be at 8 or 9am meetings (which means up between 6 and 7). I've never quite gotten used to that.

In the context of habits, I think it's helpful to use this knowledge to at the very least schedule "that thing you want to do regularly that you aren't doing now" during the times you're most inclined to do it. Which is why I workout after work and not before. I floss at night. I read at night. Mornings are a total haze for me most of the time (even though I do appreciate being up early, it's hard)

If you could skew your hours to help your overall mood/productivity, it's definitely worth trying. My ideal schedule is 10-6 or 7 instead of 7-4, 8-5, or 9-6. And in the past I've had that conversation with my boss/manager to make sure it's OK. Sometimes you never know until you ask!

But sometimes it's just the way it is for a while. What I try to do is just make sure I'm getting enough sleep each night (7.5+ hrs for me), eating right, and exercising regularly as that does drastically minimize my grogginess/bad mood.

Don't know if this helps ;)

I'm considering shifting my sleep schedule so I can get to work earlier and tip #9 - Compliment your lifestyle - is my main barrier. Why should I shift my schedule to wake up earlier when I am most creative and productive in the evenings? I already feel like I have lost much of that evening time due to the minimum shift (waking earlier) I had to make when transitioning from student to full time professional. Back in my school days I woke up around 10am, now it's 6:15. It has taken me over a year to adjust to that and I feel like I could make the shift back relatively quickly, even now.

Getting to work earlier would allow me to attend scheduled events with less stress. Currently I leave work early and then stress about making the time up later on in the week. This is compounded by our 9 hour work day (we do get every other Friday off). The risks is less sleep and the resultant negative effects (being unproductive, grumpy, moody, gaining weight, etc).

Any specific tips for changing your lifestyle? Perhaps I should be focusing on shifting my work to accommodate my more productive times? Or perhaps I should change industries to one that values work produced over time spent...
